About this attraction
Lake Bosomtwe is Ghana’s only natural lake and one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Ashanti Region. Surrounded by scenic hills and traditional communities, the lake offers a peaceful environment for relaxation, boat rides, photography, and eco-tourism experiences.
Key Facts & Formation
- Origins: Formed roughly 1.07 million years ago, it rests inside an 800-meter-deep, 10.5-km-wide meteorite crater.
- Geography: It is an endorheic lake, meaning it has no streams flowing in or out; the water level is sustained entirely by rainfall and natural evaporation.
- Local Legend: According to oral tradition, the lake was discovered in 1648 by a hunter named Akora Bompe, who followed an injured antelope into the water.
- Cultural Significance: The Ashanti people view the lake as a deity; according to their traditional beliefs, the souls of the dead come here to bid farewell to the earth goddess Asase Ya
Tourism & Activities
- Abono: The main tourist hub and shoreline settlement is Abono, where you can find police presence, local food vendors, and resting spots.
- Eco-Tourism: The crater walls are lush, green, and perfect for hiking, bird-watching, and nature walks.
- Boating & Fishing: Because the lake is considered sacred, traditional dugout canoes are taboo; local fishermen and boaters use large flat wooden planks known as padua.
- Access: The drive from Kumasi takes about 1 to 1.5 hours. An SUV or 4x4 is highly recommended, as parts of the road can be unpaved or challenging depending on weather conditions.
