Okomfo Anokye Sword Site – Kumasi’s Sacred Symbol of Unity
The Okomfo Anokye Sword Site is one of the most important historical and spiritual landmarks in Kumasi. Located near the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, the site is home to the legendary sword believed to have been planted by Okomfo Anokye, the revered priest and co-founder of the Ashanti Kingdom, over 300 years ago.
According to Ashanti history and oral tradition, Okomfo Anokye planted the sword into the ground as a symbol of unity among the Akan states during the formation of the Ashanti Empire. It is believed that he declared no one would ever be able to remove it — a prophecy many believe still stands today.
Over the years, several attempts have reportedly been made to pull the sword from the ground, but none have succeeded. This has made the site one of Kumasi’s most respected cultural and spiritual attractions.
The sword site is enclosed within a small museum-like structure that welcomes visitors interested in Ashanti history and heritage. Guests can learn about the story of Okomfo Anokye, the formation of the Ashanti Kingdom, and the spiritual significance of the sword to the Ashanti people.
The attraction also highlights the connection between the sword and the Golden Stool, another powerful symbol of Ashanti unity and leadership.
Today, the Okomfo Anokye Sword Site continues to attract tourists, students, researchers, and cultural enthusiasts from across Ghana and beyond.
