KUMASI — Police in the Ashanti Region have arrested two men at the popular Asawase Market in Kumasi after intercepting a major shipment of illegal drugs hidden inside fertilizer sacks.
The suspects, 37-year-old Osman Bassein and 38-year-old Mohammed Abdul-Razak, were caught during a targeted operation by security personnel after intelligence revealed that illegal drugs were being transported into the commercial hub disguised as agricultural goods.
In a statement signed by Superintendent Godwin Ahianyo on Wednesday, July 22, the police revealed that the operation was carried out on Tuesday, July 21. A combined team led by the Manhyia District Police Commander, along with officers from the Manhyia Divisional Criminal Investigations Department (CID) and the Zongo Police Station, stormed the location to intercept the shipment.
Upon searching the area in the presence of independent witnesses, officers recovered 13 large fertilizer sacks. However, instead of farm supplies, inspecting officers discovered second-hand clothing used to wrap and conceal 100 compressed parcels of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp.
The seized drugs were photographed at the scene for evidence and have since been secured for forensic testing. Police say both suspects are currently in custody and assisting with ongoing investigations, after which they will be processed for court.
The incident highlights a growing tactic where drug traffickers attempt to use busy market centers and disguise illicit substances within everyday cargo like secondhand clothes and farm inputs to avoid detection.
Following the successful operation, the Ashanti Regional Police Command praised local residents for providing the timely tip-off that led to the arrests.
