A fire outbreak has destroyed several fitting shops at Mempeasem, a suburb of Asawase in Kumasi, burning over 100 motorcycles, about 10 vehicles, and at least 15 container shops.
The incident happened in the early hours of Monday around 2:00 a.m. By the time the fire was brought under control, many properties worth thousands of cedis had already been burnt.
Residents say they are not sure what caused the fire, but some believe it could be connected to ongoing power outages in the area, possibly leading to an electrical fault.
The fire has affected many people in the area, including a laundry business with about 30 workers, as well as around 100 artisans and shop owners who depend on the place for their daily work.
Victims are now appealing to the government and the public for support to help them recover from the loss.
One of the affected artisans, Masa Kojo, said the situation is very difficult, especially when it comes to explaining the losses to customers.
“We have never experienced anything like this before. We can’t really tell what caused it. By the time the fire service came, everything was already gone,” he said.
Workers at the laundry shop also shared their concerns, saying many customers’ clothes and items were destroyed in the fire.
“Everything got burnt. We couldn’t save anything, and now we don’t know how to handle it because these were people’s belongings,” they said.
Residents are calling on the Ghana National Fire Service to step up fire safety education in the area and also investigate the cause of the fire to help prevent such incidents in the future.
