Parliament has confirmed reports that the Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North, Kwame Ohene Frimpong, has been detained at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam.
The confirmation came in a statement released by the Clerk to Parliament, Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, who said parliamentary leadership is currently handling the matter.
According to the statement, the Speaker of Parliament together with the leadership of the House has engaged Ghana’s embassy in The Hague to gather full details surrounding the incident.
Parliament also stated that the public will be updated as more information becomes available.
Although details surrounding the detention remain unclear, sources close to the MP claim he travelled from Ghana on Saturday night and arrived in Amsterdam on Sunday morning, where he was reportedly stopped by security officials before going through immigration procedures.
The incident comes months after allegations surfaced linking the MP to suspected financial and human trafficking-related crimes — accusations he strongly denied.
Some reports alleged that US law enforcement agencies had previously investigated activities connected to an African restaurant and supermarket business in Chicago, which was allegedly linked to fraudulent financial transactions.
The reports further claimed that several women believed to be Ghanaian-British citizens were arrested during investigations involving bank accounts allegedly used for transferring funds.
Reacting to the allegations at the time, Kwame Frimpong rejected the claims and suggested some people were deliberately trying to damage his reputation.
“People overlook the good work I’ve been doing and rather choose to spread false stories about me,” he reportedly stated.
