The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), in collaboration with sanitation company City Expert Group, has introduced vacuum sweeper trucks as part of efforts to improve cleanliness and address flooding challenges within the city.

The new machines are expected to remove dust, sand, and other debris from major roads and public spaces, helping to prevent the blockage of drains that often contributes to flooding during heavy rains.

Speaking during a demonstration of the equipment in Kumasi, representatives of City Expert Group said the initiative forms part of a broader effort to support the Assembly’s sanitation agenda and create a cleaner urban environment.

According to the company, accumulated dust and waste materials frequently find their way into drainage systems, reducing their effectiveness and increasing the risk of flooding. The vacuum sweepers are therefore expected to play a key role in keeping roads and waterways clear.

Residents and traders were also encouraged to support the initiative by disposing of waste responsibly. Authorities specifically urged traders operating within the Kumasi Central Business District to avoid sweeping debris into roadside gutters, a practice that contributes to drainage blockages.

Officials believe the introduction of the sweepers will not only improve sanitation but also help protect road infrastructure by reducing dust accumulation that can damage road surfaces over time.

Many residents have welcomed the initiative, expressing hope that the new equipment will contribute to a cleaner city and help reduce the recurring flooding experienced in some parts of Kumasi during the rainy season.
